The Blend over California

The National Blend of Models is the National Weather Service's statistically post-processed, calibrated blend of many models — and it is the first guess every forecast office edits before the official grids go out. So the pair is worth reading together: the Blend is what the machines say, the NDFD is what the forecasters signed. The Compare tool in the drawer will draw one over the other at the same valid time, or subtract them.

For California that calibration matters most where the terrain is sharpest: blend temperatures carry a high-resolution downscaling that keeps a Sierra valley cold pool and its ridgeline in separate pixels.
